VINTAGE MIDGETS {VINTAGE SPEEDCARS} |
THE VINTAGE SPEEDCAR ASSOCIATION, NSW PO Box 73, Wentworthville, 2145 Sydney Australia |
This page last updated on: 25 September, 2007

The purpose of this site is to let the www know about our club, it's history, aims and activities and to show off some of our members cars to interested people. It is one of about 10 vintage oval track clubs in Australia, that cater for all sorts of old speedway cars and motorcycles. Some are just for Midgets or Supermodifieds/Sprintcars, while others cater for all types, including TQ's and Junior Speedcars, motorcycle speedway sidecars, Micromidgets, Stock cars, Stock Rods and Sedans/Saloon Cars as well as the Supermodifieds/Sprintcars and Midgets (more often than not called Speedcars in Australia). In general, around 20-25 years old is the qualifying age. Unlike in the USA, most do not allow racing within their club structure, but participate in static displays and "spirited demonstrations". Safety and enjoyment are the paramount aims. How It Began.... A conversation over a few drinks at a club late in 1982 between three owners of old Midgets turned to the possibility of starting a club to bring to gether former owners and drivers and those who currently owned old Midgets. This led to another meeting on May 30th the following year attended by around thirty people who were former owners, drivers and fans. Since those simple beginnings, the Vintage Speedcar Association NSW held it's 100th bi-monthly in May 2000. Now, well into the new Millenium, with 3 more years behind us we continue honour those drivers and owners from a bygone era by locating and restoring the cars that made them famous.
Our unofficial motto....."Preserving the future by promoting the past" |

Welcome to the VSA website, dedicated to the owners, drivers, crews and the cars of yesteryear. |
Here's a few images of our ~100 club cars. If you have a good vintage shot you would like published, contact me through the Guest Book. |
Bill Wells in the Fuda Brothers Volvo Reckon he might be having fun? This was Kevin's favourite photo, the one special action shot he had been years trying to take. Whether trackside, in the pits, or back at the motel, Kevin and his camera were there. He specialised in candid, behind the scenes shots; those which showed his friends enjoying themselves, letting him combine his love for photography with his love of the midgets with which he spent his early years. The car, now in Qld. is actually a "classic" caged car, sans cage. |

The 'GREY' Holden Here is a shot showing 3 of our club cars with 2 different configurations of the old "Grey" Holden motor of 1948-1963. This was a GM/Chev designed, in-line 6 cyl. unit of 132.5-138c.i. which was usually bored out to 149c.i. (and sometimes more!!)and fitted with 10:1-12:1 high comp. pistons. They were fitted with carbies such as Solex, Amal, SU's, the standard. D/D BXOV-1 Strombergs or fuel injection (fitted to all 3 cars here) Some (eg. #24) had one of the 100 or so REPCO crossflow cyl. heads built for racing in the 60's.. |
Hi, I'm Ray Dean, creator of this site in my almost restored Carl Dunkley Holden #98, taken December 2004. It still looks a lot like here, but is a lot closer to completion.
There are some more photos on page 2 |
"Scarem" Sid Middlemass in the Wells Brother's fuel injected Volvo in turn 4 at Moruya, NSW. Built in the late 60's, it was the "new" #54 as the original #54 Holden/Fiat became #45. Restored in the 90's by Sid, it is now in the hands of Phil Christensen, owner of a high HP stable of several vintage midgets. |
One of the late Frank "Satan" Brewer's V8/60 midgets. Originally built as by Solar, (possibly a kit), it doesn't have the original stainless steel rail frame. Brought to Australia in th late 40's, along with the #10 and #48 cars as "spares", it never raced here. Instead it was stored until the late 90's and appeared restored in 2000. Although painted as the "Flame Car", the real one, the #48, is currently being restored in Sydney by Bill Wells as the Don Mackay Holden, #13, as raced by Johnny Harvey in the 50's and 60's. |

Two shots of one of the famous Ron Ward V-Twins. No-one but Ron knows how many were built, as he kept swapping and changing. The Shot on the left is the late Kevin Buksin in his favourite car. The one on the right is restorer Don Pollock having a bit of understeer problem, no doubt having great fun. The home built V-twins were a mixture of Harley, J.A.P. and Norton with home-made components included. Although Sid Reed was Ron's main driver, his cars were driven by Bill Shevill, Barry Robinson, Don Pollock, and numerous others when owned by Ron or others. |
Photographer to be confirmed. |
PLANNED ADDITIONS: More photos of our restored and unrestored cars, uncaged and caged. Vintage photos, from various tracks in Australia. More links to Australian and overseas sites. |
Note: It may take a little while to load a few of the pictures on this site at present as some of the files are a bit large. I'm in the process of replacing them with smaller ones. |
Rob Smart in "Dopey", the Elliot Holden. Ever since Herb Elliot owned #77, it has allways had a drawing of Disney's "Dopey" in one form or another on the side. Built in approx. 1953, it was brought to NSW as Q8 by Lew Marshall. |
Gordon Nelson in his "Ivor Kaye Holden |
John Waldock's "Beasley Supercharged Peugeot" |
Fans from both sides of the world would be pleased to see these two cars restored. One is one of the Jack Stroud Honker II Offies, #3 in which Bob Tattersall won the 1969 USAC Championship, the other is the Shannon Brothers Sesco which was runner-up. |

CARS IN WESTERN AUSTRALIA |
HERE IS THE LIST YOU HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR! |
The accompanying list of pre-roll cage cars to this site has been here for some time. While it is not complete by any means, or I'm sure, 100% accurate, I have made a start. These are the cars I have seen, heard or read about. Many of these cars would be complete and running or under restoration. Some would be "less than complete", but are apparently the "recognised remains" of said cars. There may be the odd dispute about who has certain cars as a result of this list. That is up to the respective owners and clubs to adjudicate. .No replicas are listed here to my knowledge, nor "Classic" caged cars, which will be added later as seperate list..There may be one or two here that should be in caged and vice versa. If you want to add a car, or change any details, please contact me via the visitor's book. |
